Even before the first flake flies today, Indy has tied for the 5th snowiest January on record. (Of course, weather time doesn’t begin until the late 1800s.) Our 20.9 inch total is part of a seasonal total of just under 30 inches. We will pass that yesterday. In fact, by tonight we will probably pass by last season’s total for the entire winter.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for central Indiana from 1pm Saturday until 1am Sunday. A Clipper is still expected to streak across the state this afternoon and evening. (Oh yes they call it the streak.) It will put down 3-5 inches of snow over most of central Indiana by late evening. The snow will be heavy at times, falling at the rate of an inch per hour. The snow will move in from the west in the early afternoon. It should begin between Noon-2pm in Lafayette, 1-3pm in Indy, and 2-4pm in Muncie and Richmond.
Here’s an hourly computer model sequence, starting at 2pm and ending at 4pm. (All images via weatherbell.com.)
The accumulating snow should be moving out of the state by 10pm tonight.
Temps will fall to the upper teens and lower 20s. The REALLY cold air is waiting again for much of next week, and another clipper could get here by Wednesday.

I was the Cass county sheriff from 1979 thru 1986. It seems to me that we had a number of snowy winters in that time. Were any of those years recorded to have one of the “top five” snowfalls. I remember using the snowmobile to take medications and Doctors to homes.
Thanks,
