The scary story I’ve been telling for Halloween hasn’t changed. The day will be warmer and wet, with three different weather threats. First is heavy rain, most likely in the midday, afternoon, and evening. Final rain totals across the state will range from one to two inches by late night. Indy’s wettest Halloween on record in brought 1.3 inches of rain in 1941. The second threat comes from gusty winds throughout the day, up to 40 mph at times. These winds will be independent of winds associated with severe thunderstorms, which are threat number three. The most likely time for the severe weather is this evening, just in front of the surface cold front. Watch the radar for a thin line of storms that may come together in the late afternoon in Illinois and then track into Indiana. The biggest threat is from wind damage, but there is also a tornado threat. There will be a strong flow from the south a little off the ground ahead of the front, and strong west/northwest wind flow higher in the atmosphere, ready to throw a Transylvania Twist into the Halloween story. The cold front is east of Indy by midnight, and will be followed by cooler and drier air for Friday. The next weather maker is an upper level low Saturday to our north. It will bring a slight shower chance and lots of clouds, mainly from Indy northward. WIKI-POTEETIA: As promised, yesterday was the first above average day we’ve had in the second half of October. INDY ALMANAC: The average high today is 60 and the average low is 41. Records are 82 and 24. The sunrise time is 8:13 and the sun sets at 6:44. PAUL’S PREVIOUS PREDICTION: Yesterday’s high was 61. […] Indy came close last year, with a “trace” of snow the day before Halloween. But the day itself last year was just as miserable as this year, only warmer. It was windy and wet: there was a Tornado Watch for the south half of the state by evening, and we […]
