Not a huge snow today, just enough to mess with the second half of morning drive and any midday errands you need to run. The afternoon rush hours won’t be a huge headache. This Alberta Clipper clips along briskly, leaving behind an inch – or less – from the Indy Airport back to the west and southwest. Metro Indy up to the north and northeast, including Muncie, should see 1-2 inches. Lake Effect snow could continue into the evening in northern Indiana but I don’t think that will add to the central Indiana totals. It’s possible that flurries could pop from around Peru over to Muncie this afternoon and evening. An inch in Indy today would still be the biggest total this month. The vast majority of our 15.3 inches of snow so far came in the week between Christmas and New Years. The weekend is 50/50. Saturday is sunny and cold. Sunday could bring the dreaded “wintry mix” back into the state, as milder air moves north back into the Midwest. That warmer, more moist air will run up and over the heavier, colder air at the surface. That’s the setup for precip to start as a liquid, then go into a freezing free-fall by the time it makes contact with the ground. The biggest threat appears to be Sunday afternoon and evening. Precip will shift to strictly liquid by Monday morning’s drive. Indy hasn’t been above freezing since Sunday. A three-day string of mild weather kicks off next work week, peaking on Tuesday with the area flirting with 60, and the Storm Prediction Center already advertising a risk for severe weather just to the south of us on Tuesday. (Chart attached.) After some solid rain later Tuesday and early Wednesday we will cool down pretty quickly again for the balance of the week. It’s likely January will end with the weather it has featured most of the month: about average on temperatures overall, but not especially snowy. Paul, I used to be able to put my zip code in a box in the upper right corner and get forecasts for my home town. Is this not available any longer or is it just something else they have blocked at my place of employment? It is almost impossible to get to any websites at work. 🙁 Thanks!
