High pressure takes the wheel today, traveling from around St. Louis in the morning to western Pennsylvania tonight. For Indy that means flurries from last night and overnight will dissipate and make way for more sun and less wind.
A clipper is on deck for Thursday. I think the main impact for us will be in the afternoon and early evening. Expect a little light snow, but amounts once again should hold to an inch or
less. By this time in the season last January the Indianapolis snow total stood at 23.6 inches. This year we are holding at 5 inches exactly. BTW, an average winter total at this point is 12.6 inches.
You could make the case that the most dramatic weather this winter season so far were yesterday’s spring-like wind, rain, and tornadoes in southern Indiana. Meteorologists from the Louisville weather service will be investigating damage today. Three EF-0 or EF-1 tornadoes were confirmed yesterday, striking near Madison, Floyds Knobs, and Clarksville, and doing some minor damage. Hail was reported around West Lafayette, water stood in the streets of Bloomington, and a 62 mph wind gust was reported in Bartholomew County. The Indianapolis rain total was .72 inches. If it had been cooler? Let’s just say that seasonal snow total wouldn’t be 5 inches.
ALMANAC:
Average Indy high today is 35, and the average low is 20. Record high is 64, and record low is -22. Sunrise is 8:03 and sunset is 5:48. That’s a gain of two minutes from yesterday!
