A Winter Storm Watch remains posted for Thursday. Low pressure will slide across the state Thursday. Snow begins after midnight tonight.
It will be heavy at times Thursday morning, and the chance will remain for light to moderate snow Thursday afternoon and evening.
Three to six inches should be the final total. Even on the low side that would be the biggest snow event of the season. (So far!)
Winds will increase Thursday night into Friday. Wind chills through that entire period will be below zero. There may be some Lake Michigan-effect snow showers that set up Friday. There could be blowing and drifting, depending on the moisture content of the snow, which will also play a role in how much accumulates. Here are some notes on that from the Weather Service:
AS FOR SNOW AMOUNTS...WORKING FOR HIGHER AMOUNTS ARE ...LIFT IN A GOOD SIZED SNOW GROWTH ZONE, OVERALL PROFILES FAVORING SNOW RATIOS AROUND 16 TO 1, AND POTENTIAL FRONTOGENETIC FORCING LEADING TO BANDING. WORKING AGAINST HIGHER AMOUNTS WILL BE THE DRIER AIR WORKING IN ALOFT THURSDAY AFTERNOON, HINTS THAT HIGHER DEWPOINT AIR WILL WORK INTO THE AREA AND MAKE THE SNOW MORE OF A WET SNOW AT TIMES, AND QPF FORECASTS THAT MAKE EVEN A 20 TO 1 RATIO PRODUCE NOT QUITE 6 INCHES IN THE 12 HOUR PERIOD WITH THE HEAVIEST SNOW.
