Conditions looks good for us Tuesday night to see Saturn as it makes a close pass by Earth. The planet is best seen through the eyepiece of a telescope but you shouldn’t need one this week as it will be at “opposition,” or the point in its orbit when it is closest to the Earth.
Saturn will be above the horizon all night long, rising in the southeast around sunset and slowly gliding across the sky before setting in the southwest around dawn.
Busy Tuesday night? Look again any night through the rest of the month. Saturn will appear nearly as bright and in the same part of the sky. You can see the planet just with your eyes, but you’ll need a telescope to see the rings.
