A weekend storm system will bring mainly rain, but there will be a wedge of sub-freezing air at the surface for an hour or so overnight. That spells slippery road possibilities. Good thing this didn’t happen Wednesday night, eh? The biggest risk for freezing rain comes between about midnight & 5am Saturday for most of Central Indiana. Here’s a computer simulation of the precipitation (no extra charge for the rhymes) at 5am, via weatherbell.com. Surface temps should be comfortably over freezing by the time most folks are up around 7am, although the wintry mix threat may last ’til late morning around South Bend. We stay on the warmer side of the fast-moving surface system Saturday. It will shoot northeastward through the northwest corner of Indiana. Expect temps into the 40s Saturday afternoon, peaking around 50 in the late afternoon and evening. Could be up to two inches of rain, with the heaviest rain likely in the afternoon Saturday. Then colder air pours in Sunday behind the cold front, with temps falling to around freezing during the day, winds gusting to 30 mph, and a dusting of snow possible. A couple of inches may accumulate in Michiana. INDY SNOW SCOREBOARD 2.8″ This Season 8.3″ Average At This Point 8.9″ Last Year At This Point Our next snow chance (all snow with this one…don’t sweat any ice…) arrives with a clipper Tuesday. An inch or two looks possible around here, with some higher accumulations in the northern quarter of the state. The Lake may also come into play Tuesday night and Wednesday to add even more snow in that part of the state. And then the COLD. Sub-zero is looking likely early Wednesday and Thursday morning. Here are the numbers from one computer run for Thursday morning lows! WIKI-POTEETIA The average Indy temp in 2014 was 50.2 degrees. This ties for the third coolest year on record with 1963.
