**SATURDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE**
The Storm Prediction Center doesn’t see significant organization to the current batch of storms in Illinois this afternoon, and is changing the risk from “moderate” to “slight” for all of Indiana. There will still be storms starting tonight in the mid to late evening, and there could still be storm warnings due to higher wind gusts. Additionally there is a Flood Watch for Indy southward, with up to 1-3 inches of rain possible.
Storms have already raced through the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend, and several waves of water are possible before Sunday evening.
The Storm Prediction Center has Indy under a “moderate” risk of severe weather today, and a “slight” risk tomorrow. The biggest threat from the early Saturday storms is large hail. The threat tonight will be damage from high wind gusts and heavy rainfall. There is another threat Sunday afternoon, especially from Indy east and southward.
Saturday morning storms will move away, and the sun will break through. A warm front rolls into central this afternoon, and relative humidity will soar, along with high temps that should be about ten degrees warmer than yesterday.
The thinking of the last several days continues: the threat of widespread severe weather is greatest tonight. Instability will be high, and the jet stream will be kicking. At the surface, a cold front will slowly approach. (It will stall out right around Indy tomorrow.) Heavy rain and damaging wind gusts are a good bet tonight.
It might still be raining as the track first opens Sunday, but that complex of storms should be in the process of moving out. Unfortunately, a strong area of upper level area of low pressure will sprint across the state, bringing more severe weather chances, especially east and south of Indy.
That low will help to shake loose the surface cold front, and the whole mess will be a memory by later Sunday night.
INDY ALMANAC:
The average high today is 85 and the average low is 66. Records are 98 and 51. The sun rises at 6:39 and sets at 9:04.
