Brace yourself. Today brings the first highs in the 50s since the first two days of the month. That’s a 20 degree tumble from yesterday’s heat in most parts of central Indiana. There will be periods of rain at any time today and tonight.
Thunder is possible from around Muncie through Indy through Bloomington and to the east. There is even a slight risk of severe storms late this afternoon south and east from a line around Richmond down to Columbus, where it will also be warmer today with highs in the 60s. Those places are closer to a stalled frontal boundary. A strong area of low pressure will ride along that front from the South, arriving near Louisville this evening and ending up near Toledo Thursday morning as it finally pulls away – and pulls the front away – from the Midwest.
That means much of Thursday will be dry, although a shower chance is still possible in the morning, and clouds may linger much of the day. Thursday afternoon temps will only be in the mid 50s. It will be all the way down into the upper 30s from Indy northward by early Friday morning. Another upper air disturbance spells spotty showers for Fast Friday. I still think the weekend will be dry, with some clouds Saturday, and more sunshine Sunday, when temps will improve to the mid 60s. A steady warm up into the 70s and maybe 80 is likely next week.
Thunderstorms last night produced wind damage to the southeast of Indianapolis. In Johnson County, grandstands at Edinburgh Community High School were bent in two and dragged onto the race track and football field, according to the National Weather Service. Additionally, power poles were bent, and large trees were down west of Waldron in Shelby county. There were reports of 50 mph wind gusts in Johnson County, and 60 mph gusts in Shelby County.
