leaves – they just don’t see it. Here’s a shot of the sun rising at Barrow Alaska today at 1:17pm. They haven’t seen it since November 18th. Could you handle that? I’d be crazy. (Crazier.) The sun over the horizon for less than an hour today. Barrow is the USA’s northernmost city. The sun’s most direct rays shine over areas between the equator and Tropic of Capricorn this time of year, never directly reaching locations above the Arctic Circle. Things reverse in a few months. From May 11 through August 1 the sun never dips below the horizon. By the way, it isn’t actually “dark” from mid-November through late-January. There is three to six hours daily of what is called “civil twilight.” That’s when you can see objects outside. The sun is just 6 degrees below the horizon. It’s what we have just before a sunrise and after a sunset, although it obviously doesn’t last as long. (Click here for the original, un-cropped webcam picture of the sunrise.)]]>
