EARLIER POST AT 6AM:
In summer we say it’s not the heat…it’s the humidity. Today it’s not (just) the snow…it’s the wind.
A Blizzard Warning for much of central Indiana, including Indianapolis, is in effect until 7pm, part of what could be the biggest snow in almost four years.
Conditions will deteriorate rapidly as an area of low pressure moves northeastward. The system is so intense that “thundersnow” is possible.
Final amounts could be up to 10 inches in most places, driven by northeast winds gusting to 40 mph. I think up to 6 inches could fall around Lafayette and up to 8 inches in the northeast part of the state around Marion. Farther north and northwest only 1-3 inches is expected in South Bend.
Those winds quickly caused whiteout conditions early morning in southern Indiana.
The southeast side of Bloomington got two inches of a snow in an hour, and one to two inches per hour is possible as the snow moves in through the morning.
The snow will lessen in intensity throughout the afternoon. The wind will let up a bit tonight and be closer to 10 mph by tomorrow.
If Indy makes it to ten inches that will be more from one snow event than the entire winter of 2011-2012. The last big snow storm on record produced 1.26 inches on January 28, 2009.
INDY ALMANAC:
The average high today is 36 and the average low is 22. Records are 67 and -5. The sunrise time is 8:05 and the sun sets at 5:27.
