Welcome to September, and – if you’re a meteorologist – Fall. Don’t panic – ya gotta draw the line somewhere. It’s not going to feel like Fall any time soon. Humidity will still be thick today. There will be some fog at first. Highs hit the mid 80s, and there’s an area of low pressure approaching in the upper atmosphere. All that moisture and all that instability will lead to a slight chance of showers and storms by afternoon. Showers and storms are a good bet tonight, and a few could be severe.
The surface cold front won’t completely clear central Indiana until Tuesday evening, when the sky begins to clear, and the humidity starts to fall.
Oh yeah, and it is September, so we can start slicing and dicing the August stats.
The National Weather Service says preliminary numbers for “summer” (June-July-August) will be the wettest in five years, and coolest in 10 years.
August is also an interesting month for those who enjoy weather folklore. A follower writes: “My fifth grade class is wanting to see if the old wives tale of fog days in August is true. We have searched the web and we cannot find the accurate number of foggy mornings in August thus far. Do you happen to have that data? We are going to see if the number of foggy mornings in August really do equal the number of snows during the winter.” The magic number is 21. Is that legal?
