LUNCH TIME UPDATE: Showers have been sparse north of Indy, with no rain at Lafayette or Muncie. Evansville’s gotten .50 of an inch, and .28″ has fallen in the Haute. Afternoon rain chances should be confined to about Hamilton County southward, and that chance should drift away to the southeast through the afternoon.
(EARLIER):
Every place has a set of weather clichés. As a kid growing up listening to AM radio out of Chicago I was well acquainted with “cooler near the Lake.” When we vacationed in Hawaii the tv weather guessers would croon “quiet, with trade winds.” (They aren’t crooning that today.) Seems around here it’s always (insert weather) south of I-70. (I will also accept “north of 70.”)
Guess what? The heaviest, steadiest rain today will be south of I-70, although a thick overcast will be over all of central Indiana. (It will stay dry with some sunshine around South Bend.) The rain will diminish by afternoon in Lafayette and Terre Haute, and by evening over most of the state. This is being driven by a low pressure system moving today from Missouri to southern Kentucky. Competing with this low? A high pressure system over the northern Great Lakes.
I think it will be dry tonight and most of this weekend in most of central Indiana. With the low pressure stalling out just to the south of the state – there could still be spotty showers east and southeast of Indy. Double check the dop, but don’t expect to be rained out.
A sharp upper level trough should finally clear the weather deck by Tuesday of next week. Storm chances will be around Monday and Tuesday afternoon, before a fresh shot of sunshine and cooler-than-normal temperatures arrive Wednesday.
