The weather biz is filled with ups and downs. Yesterday’s high was the warmest since the first of July. Today’s will be the coolest since June 10. Part of the reason: the arrival of a surface cold front and upper level trough that sparked storms Monday afternoon.
The squall line produced 45-60 mph wind gusts and some small hail. It also produced precipitation, which was welcome news in places that had been missed by recent rain. Muncie and Indy recorded an identical amount: .39 of an inch. Terre Haute received .48″ and Lafayette was soaked with .65″. Bloomington also had a round of rain in the morning for a daily total of 1.41 inches.
It’ll be several days until you hear thunder again, but there could be a few light instability showers or sprinkles in the afternoon today or tomorrow. It will start out sunny, and the cool unsettled air above will cause a condensing commotion, cooking plenty of puffy cumulus clouds.
Lows tonight and tomorrow night will be in the low to mid 50s. Our best shot at a record in Indy is tomorrow night, when the record is 51 (from 1976) and my forecast is 54.
P.S. The Colts unveiled a promotion this week asking for game day weather predictions for the upcoming season, for a chance to win $500,000. That’s 20 days of specific temperatures far in the future. The Weather Service in Indy tweeted yesterday that the odds of nailing that “may be around 54,000,000,000,000,000,000,000:1. ” As I said, the weather biz is filled with ups and downs.
