Storms have the chance of firing again today, after an active Sunday evening and early Monday morning. A tornado was reported on the ground just west of Rensselaer in northwest Indiana about 9pm Indy time last night. A 55 mph wind gust was reported in Muncie, and a 50 mph gust was measured in Marion County. There were many reports of hail, and some spots water-logged more than an inch of rain.
At the moment we are not in the Storm Prediction Center’s risk of severe weather today, despite the continuing storm chances. There should be plenty of dry hours for practice at the Track, and you can expect muggy highs in the low to mid 80s across central Indiana.
The shower and storm chance will still be around tonight and tomorrow, as we not-so-anxiously await the arrival of a cold front. That’s a part of the powerful spring storm that dumped up to a foot of snow in Colorado and Wyoming. Snow in May is not unusual there, but the amounts involved should place this event in the Top Ten. Meanwhile, tornadoes struck Nebraska and caused widespread damage in several towns in the east part of the state.
That cold front arrives Tuesday afternoon in Central Indiana. Storms will be likely, and as a secondary wave rolls into the state Wednesday there will be more showers.
Is the Denver snow coming here? No, but below average temperatures are. Highs will only be in the upper 50s Thursday and Friday. Shower chances are around Thursday and maybe Friday, but we may still have a shot at dry weather for Fast Friday. And – believe it or not – another good Saturday is on tap, although highs will only be in the 60s. That should make for a Fast Saturday at IMS.
