A cold front triggers mainly morning snow showers today, with a coating of snow possible in places. The biggest travel threat will come from suddenly limited visibilities with the snow being whipped by gusty winds. Those breezes could blow to as high as 40 mph in the midday and afternoon hours behind the front. Highs will only be around freezing in Indy, Lafayette, Kokomo, Muncie and Richmond. Mid 30s are likely in Terre Haute, Bloomington, and Columbus. Wind chills are unlikely to exceed the teens.
The winds will ease tonight, but a clearing sky will help sink the temps to teens. Not quite a record, but still a solid 20 degrees below average. Our next weather maker brings clouds tomorrow evening, and a good chance of rain Thursday. Some thunder is also possible. The Storm Prediction Center is already advising that severe weather could extend into southwest Illinois Thursday.
Severe weather’s been scarce this year. There have only been four tornadoes confirmed around the USA. That’s the lowest since March of 1951. Last March was also quiet, with only 18 tornadoes reported. The year to date totals are also low. A preliminary 49 tornadoes have been tallied in 2014, about a third of the 156 average to this point.
WIKI-POTEETIA:
One year ago today a lot of us were waking up to more than six inches of snow on the ground. Gusty winds created drifts over 1 foot deep in some areas. It was only the third time since the 1880s that a snowfall of 4 inches or more had happened so late in the season.
INDY ALMANAC:
The average high today is 56 and the average low is 36. Records are 81 and 5. The sun rises at 7:41 and sets at 8:02.
