February 23, 1779 – A cold clear morning froze the still waters along the Wabash River just south of Vincennes. The ice was half-inch to three-quarters inch thick. The army under George Rogers Clark marched six miles north along the flooded Wabash, at times through the icy waters, to retake Vincennes from the British shortly after sunset.
