Today will be only be the 11th day this year with above normal temperatures. Yesterday’s highs were the warmest in over a month. Indy’s 49 degrees was the 2nd warmest temp all year. Lafayette made it to 47. Richmond and Muncie both hit 46. It was 48 in Terre Haute and 51 in Bloomington.
It will be a couple degrees cooler today, behind a cold front that moved through overnight and was kind enough to bring clouds that kept up the meltdown. It never dropped below freezing. Expect more sun today, with clouds quickly piling up tonight as even milder, moist air surges toward the state.
Consider tomorrow’s system the first spring-like cold front we have to deal with. Ahead of the front, temps will soar into the 50s for the warmest day of the young year. The moist air will combine with the shrinking snow pack to bring fog and clouds to the area tomorrow. Periods of showers are possible at any time. Total new precipitation should range from half an inch to an inch. A line of showers and storms that could be severe should move through the area late in the afternoon and early in the evening. Here are some early estimates of the ETA:
6-7 pm Lafayette
7-8 pm Indy
8-9 pm Muncie, Richmond
Damaging winds are the biggest threat, and the breezes will continue to pick up even as the cold front packs up and leaves by late evening. Highs return to the 40s Friday and Saturday, and get progressively colder afterward. I still see a slight shower chance Saturday, and a better chance for snow Monday, but (for the moment at least) it doesn’t look heavy.
