Happy birthday, National Weather Service! Most of the Indianapolis weather history that I reference started 143 years ago today. That was the first day of official Weather Bureau records for Indy. (It was the “Weather Bureau” before it became the “Weather Service” in the 1970s.)
On that first day in Indy: there wasn’t any precipitation, and the high was 28. The low? They didn’t start recording it until the beginning of March. Can’t say I blame them.
This 21st-century morning features sub-zero temperatures and chills as low as -15 north of Indy in Lafayette, Kokomo and Muncie. The sky will become mostly sunny today and stay clear tonight and tomorrow. Even colder temperatures are coming early Tuesday morning, with chills as low as -20.
The good news is the lack of snow this week. It shouldn’t return until Friday. We’ll manage, considering the State Of The Snow. As expected, up to two inches of Sunday morning stuff fell north of Indy, including Lafayette and Muncie. By the time you got south to the Indianapolis Weather Service (Happy birthday!) only .6 of an inch was recorded. That’s still enough to push this snow season up to the number 6 spot on the all-time chart. The season total is now 45.1 inches. You can bet on getting to a Top 5 finish. We’d still need to get more than a foot of additional snow before we pass by the snow season of 1981-1982.
WIKI-POTEETIA: Today is the 15th consecutive straight sub zero morning in Minneapolis. It’s the 22nd consecutive day in Duluth. Chicago is now in 5th place on the all-time list of sub zero days. They’ve also had the most snow since the winter of 78-79.
INDY ALMANAC:
The average high today is 39 and the average low is 23. Records are 73 and -21. The sunrise time is 7:44 and the sun sets at 6:16.
PAUL’S PREVIOUS PREDICTION:
Yesterday’s high was 24. My forecast was 26.
