The Indiana atmosphere will go through several changes this weekend. Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a slippery ride.
First: there are chances of snow today, especially from I-70 northward. As warmer air moves in above us we will likely see some precipitation tonight that falls as a liquid and freezes up on surfaces where temps are in the upper 20s to right around 30.
Tonight’s wintry mix of freezing rain and snow and rain will tilt toward all rain around Bloomington and Columbus by about midnight. By daybreak tomorrow it should be all rain in Indy and surrounding counties. This will happen as a stalled stationary front dividing the state from northeast to southwest begins creeping north as a warm front
The mix could still go on through early morning in Muncie, and early to mid morning in Lafayette. Snow totals would be highest there. In Indy around an inch could accumulate today+tonight, and it could be as much as two inches in Muncie. The Lafayette area has the potential for two to three inches.
We’ll rinse that with rain Saturday, until a cold air wins the battle again Saturday night. The front moves back to the east (and keeps going this time) as a cold front, and rain switches to snow Sunday evening. Up to an inch could fall from that at any point in the state.
Cold and dry weather follows for Sunday and Monday, and that star of social media – the Tuesday snow storm – is still a threat. My thinking today is the same. Accumulating snow is likely, and heavy snow is a possibility. That heavy snow may be most likely from Indy northward. Stay tuned, or stay clicked, or whatever we say these days.
