Two years ago today the zip line was high, and so were Indy temperatures. The thermometer made it to 58. One year ago today: the record high of 65 was set. This year? Hey, we should make it up to freezing! You can’t win ’em all, as the Patriots would learn later that same Super-week in Indianapolis.
Mother Nature has plenty of zip this year, and you should enjoy another quiet day while you can. It will get more cloudy in the afternoon, and the winds will get gusty ahead of a cold front moving into the area from the Plains. That front will bring some light snow tonight and tomorrow.
The front stalls Friday, from right around Ft. Wayne back to Terre Haute. An area of low pressure will spin up along the boundary to the south and move into the state Friday evening. As warmer air aloft gets pulled into the mix we face a good chance of freezing rain and sleet with the snow Friday night. An inch of the slushy, icy stuff is possible by early Saturday morning around the Indy metro. Up to two inches could accumulate from around Lafayette to Kokomo to Muncie.
Nasty travel is possible EVERYWHERE in the state Friday evening and overnight.
Temps should warm into the 40s Saturday, and most of the precipitation from the Indy Metro area southward will be rain. The changeover from a wintry mix may be slower to the north, especially to the northwest around Lafayette. Colder air will then return later Saturday afternoon into early Saturday evening, and another inch of snow could fall everywhere.
The northern quarter of the state will get all snow, and the Friday+Saturday total could be up to 6 inches by the time you get to South Bend.
And we’re just getting warmed up! (So to speak.) Next week’s storm still looks capable of producing heavy snow exceeding 6 inches. The snow would be concentrated from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning.
INDY ALMANAC:
The average high today is 36 and the average low is 21. Records are 65 (last year!) and -11. The sunrise time is 7:55 and the sun sets at 6:02.
