Colder air is already moving in, and snow will pile on later. Travel will be tricky tonight and tomorrow, with the first significant storm of winter. Think of it as “White Friday?” First things first. The cold front has passed through. The Indy temp was 60 degrees at 11pm Wednesday night. It fell to 50 by 4am, and will move from the 40s in morning to the 30s by afternoon. A few showers are possible in the midday and afternoon. A wave of low pressure surfs the Southern Plains Thursday morning and moves quickly into the Ohio Valley by this evening. That will spread showers across central Indiana by mid to late afternoon. It will start as rain, or a mix of rain and sleet. Then: a sleet/snow mix, finishing with snow by late tonight. As Friday morning begins you could find one to three inches of slush/snow on the ground already. Ice could be a factor from around Seymour to Greensburg. Otherwise: all snow Friday. Snow could be heavy from Indy southward in the midday and afternoon. Snow should cease by mid to late evening Friday. Here are some likely final totals: LAFAYETTE: Around an inch…maybe two KOKOMO, MARION: Around two inches BOONE, HAMILTON, MADISON COUNTIES: 3-5 inches HANCOCK, MARION, HANCOCK COUNTIES: 4-6 inches BLOOMINGTON, COLUMBUS: 6-9 inches Saturday’s dry, but one more chance of snow is waiting Sunday. It could start with a wintry mix. That impulse moves northeast of us by Monday, and attention turns to temperatures, which will stay below freezing. All week. INDY ALMANAC: The average high today is 42 and the average low is 27. Records are 70 and 8. The sun rises at 7:51 and it sets at 5:21. PAUL’S PREVIOUS PREDICTION: Yesterday’s high was 61. My forecast was 60. DETAILED INDIANAPOLIS FORECAST: Today: Chance of mainly afternoon rain…possibly mixed with snow or sleet as temps fall during the day into the mid to upper 30s. Tonight: Mix changes to all snow. 1-3 inches possible by morning. Low 26. Friday: Snow, with final totals of 4-6 inches. High 28. Friday Night: Partly cloudy. Low 11. Saturday: Partly cloudy. High 25. Saturday Night: Partly cloudy. Low 12. Sunday: Mostly cloudy with afternoon and evening snow chances, possibly starting as a wintry mix. High 29. Sunday Night: Snow. Low 22.
