Records are threatened today, as temperatures get a few degrees hotter than yesterday. The current record for Indy today is 95, set in 1964 and 1983. It could also be close tomorrow, when the record is also 95, from all the way back to 1897. Pace yourself this afternoon; the heat index number will be in the upper 90s to around 100.
Indianapolis didn’t even make it to the 90 degree mark until mid July this year. Now – almost into mid September – we are continuing to cook. Today will be the 13th day of the year at 90 or hotter. The Indy high was 93 Monday, the same as Lafayette. Muncie and Bloomington made it to 92. It will be 1-3 degrees warmer than that today, around 94 in Richmond and Muncie. Highs across the state will range from 10-20 degrees above average. Plenty of sun will be around, although there are some indications a few isolated to scattered storms could fire close to Ohio River.
The better chance for rain and storms won’t arrive until the upper level ridge breaks down and a cold front at the surface arrives. That won’t get into central Indiana until tomorrow night. Prospects for precipitation look limited, but there will be chances of showers and storms from Wednesday evening into Thursday (early to mid) morning. Unfortunately central Indiana is unlikely to see more than a quarter of an inch of rainfall.
The silver lining is the golden sunshine still to come behind the front. Friday through the weekend promise blue skies and low humidity. And lower than normal temperatures.
