Suddenly, that wind is COLD! Expect chills in the teens across much of central Indiana today, and down around zero tonight. The wind will gust to around 30 mph today, and finally quiet down after midnight. Indy recorded a peak wind gust of 51 mph just after 5:30 yesterday afternoon. Half the heat today, as temperatures tumble from a 60 degree high in Indianapolis on Monday. The high was 54 in Lafayette and Richmond, 57 in Muncie, and 58 in Bloomington. It was the first 60 degree day in Indy since January. You won’t need the shovel today but scattered flurries and snow showers are possible, and with the wind whippin’ those flakes back and forth – brief drops in visibility are possible. The bigger travel problem arrives later Thursday. A sprawling storm system in the West is gathering strength and eventually will become a strong storm over the Plains tomorrow. A foot of snow or more is possible by Thursday in portions of Kansas and Nebraska. Significant ice accumulation is possible from portions of the Southern Plains to Mid-Mississippi River Valley, including Indiana. Farther south, severe thunderstorms are expected from Texas to the Lower Miss. Valley. Snow and sleet will probably fall first, on Thursday afternoon. Warmer air will then arrive at a higher level in the atmosphere, and precip that falls initially as a liquid Thursday night will become super-cooled on the way down, and freeze on contact. There could be accumulating ice from freezing rain Thursday evening and overnight, before the surface temperatures also warm to a level above freezing by midday Friday. INDY ALMANAC: The average high today is 41 and the average low is 25. Records are 69 and -8. The sunrise time is 7:32 and the sun sets at 6:26. PAUL’S PREVIOUS PREDICTION: The high yesterday was 60!
