Calendar=Weather? Not always, but it works today. The Winter Solstice arrived at 6:12am.
There could be another inch of snow accumulation Friday morning, especially northeast and east of Indianapolis. Most places will finish with about 2 inches of snow, with some locally higher amounts.
I think morning drivers will be able to confirm that in a hurry. And I hope you’re not in a hurry because, as expected, the snow-plus-wind combo platter is causing accidents and slide offs for the Friday morning commute. High winds have caused power outages and some drifting. The trip should be much easier this afternoon. Afternoon temps will be over 20 degrees cooler, with chills in the teens and single digits.
Winds will still gust to about 45 mph this morning, 40 mph this afternoon, and 30 mph by this evening as the center of low pressure pulls away to the northeast. The breeze should ease after midnight tonight. The weekend will be sunny and cold.
Because of that breeze a WIND ADVISORY is in place until 10am. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY also rolls until 10am.
The peak wind gust in Indianapolis yesterday was 53 mph! That was around 2pm, about the time temperatures also peaked, and a line of hail-producing storms zipped through. From there: no place to go but down, hitting 32 by 7pm, setting the stage for snow to stick.
No problems this weekend, and you White Christmas lovers will be happy to know we have at least a slight chance of rain/snow both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Signals are mixed on that system, but the prospect for snow looks much stronger Wednesday. I’m dreaming of a White Boxing Day?
