A small taste of Winter for Indy today, as temps tumble 20 degree off yesterday afternoon’s high, and a noticeable northwest wind makes it feel sub-freezing. Peeks of sunshine are possible.
An upper wave whips through this afternoon and tonight. That (combined with an area of low pressure at the surface in northern Indiana) puts flurries and snow showers into the mix from around Indy northward this afternoon and evening. One to three inches of snow is possible in the South Bend area by Tuesday morning, ending a snow-less streak that dates back to early March.
In central Indiana, any dusting would be confined to areas from around Muncie back toward Marion and up to South Bend. The threat should pull away fairly quickly Tuesday morning.
If you watched “Sunday Night Football” you also got a taste of winter. Snow piled up *around* Lambeau Field. Unlike the “old” days the field is now heated. I checked the Green Bay office of the National Weather Service this morning, and most totals were up to 3 inches. Three to six-inch snows extended east into northern Lower Michigan.
Over ten inches fell in Minneapolis and 10.8 inches came down at St. Cloud. Blizzard conditions were reported over west-central Minnesota into South Dakota. Winds to 50 mph drifted roads and caused whiteouts.
It’s about time. South Bend had already set a record for consecutive days with no accumulating snow. (That means more than a tenth of an inch.)
A similar record could fall today in Chicago. There will be flurries in the area, but if the O’Hare just gets a trace that means 281 consecutive days this year without a measurable snowfall. And if the record falls it will likely last. No more snow chances after today for the windy city. Another Chicago snow record could then fall December 16 is the latest in a season for a measurable snowfall. That happened in 1965.
Our weekend rain was dreary, but needed. We’re up to 1.23″ for December. We had 1.33″ the *entire* month of November.
