It’s been a week since Thanksgiving and finally: temperatures are back in the oven.
Highs should be right around 50 today. That will be the highest Indy has been since the Friday following turkey day, but THAT high temperature came very early Black Friday morning, before a cold front crashed the state and before most of the “Furby’s” were off the shelves.
Expect just a few high clouds passing through. It still looks like two shots at showers over the next seven days. The first chance comes Saturday night and Sunday. The bigger chance – and next major temperature swing – will arrive Monday night into Tuesday of the next week.
Until then: no place to go but UP as we go from November to December. This chart shows the expected temperature departure from normal for Sunday, and it’s pretty significant from coast to coast, with the big exception being the storm-battered West Coast.
Now, to the East and Gulf Coasts.
The Atlantic hurricane season ends tomorrow and we can assume the final advisory for the season from the National Hurricane Center was for Sandy, just prior to its New Jersey landfall back on the night of October 29th.
In an average season there are 12.1 named storms, 6.4 hurricanes, and 2.7 major hurricanes. This season produced 19 named storms, 10 of which became hurricanes, but just 1 of those became a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale). That 19 named storms ties for the third greatest number of such storms in a season on record. It was the third consecutive season to have 19 named storms.
Michael was the strongest storm of the season, and the only major hurricane. The USA again was spared a major hurricane landfall. That’s the seventh consecutive year. Hurricane Wilma was the last major hurricane to strike the U.S. coast back on October 24, 2005. That’s almost 2,600 days ago. The previous longest span was 2,232 days (between the 1900 Galveston hurricane and the 1906 Florida Keys hurricane).
