11:30AM UPDATE:
Temps are still going into the the 70s today, and you can still have lunch outside….however…
The area of showers and storms in Illinois has extended farther southward than expected. As it moves northeast it could clip any place north of I-70, including Indianapolis, with a mid to late afternoon shower or storm. These storms could produce some small hail. If it happens it would hold highs into strictly into the mid 70s today.
MORNING EDITION:
In Indianapolis, the Fever is hot, and the weather’s warming!
Today’s high temperature should be Indy’s warmest in two and a half weeks. October’s top temp so far is 77, from the 4th of the month.
This will only be the fifth time this month we’ve been able to crack 70. It happened most recently last Wednesday.
You will definitely see more clouds than yesterday. Low pressure over the Plains is moving to the western Great Lakes today and tomorrow. A couple of upper level disturbances will be traveling with it.
The first one will bring showers and storms that should stay to the north of Indianapolis this afternoon. The radar could pop from around Lafayette to Muncie northward.
The next batch moves in after midnight from the north and northwest, and could spell a shower or storm or two for central Indiana Tuesday. I think it will move along by Tuesday night.
The next weather maker is a bigger deal. After four fine days in the 70s temperatures will begin crashing Friday. Saturday looks like a Raw Deal. In fact, I’m forecasting the possibility of wet snowflakes mixed with rain Saturday Night around South Bend.
A powerful storm system will bring the first significant snow of the season to a wet West Coast. The Sierra Nevada Range should see up to 18 inches of snow at the higher elevations. Yosemite National Park could see 8 inches of snow. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across the area.
It doesn’t look like severe weather is a threat this week. Actually (with the noteworthy exception of the early-season tragic twisters in Southern Indiana) t’s been a very very quiet year. It could end up being THE quietest year on record for tornadoes in the USA, according the Storm Prediction Center.
Sometimes, silence IS golden.
