The sun stays strong today, and with high pressure docked in Pennsylvania, the wind flow returns to the south and we’ll put a few more temperature points on the board. High pressure has the upper hand until Friday. The best chance of showers and storms is Friday afternoon and evening. Deja vu all over? Not quite. This week’s storms won’t rival the rain makers of last Friday, but you might still tailgate with an umbrella for Friday Night Football.

Today’s the day we lose the sun before 8pm in the evening. You should treasure every minute of September 11, 2012. For so many reasons.

I was on TV the morning of 9/11. I remember wrapping up the morning show with a wacky graphic showing the forecast for that evening’s Jimmy Buffet concert as (what is now) Klipsch in Noblesville.

That outdoor concert was cancelled. It would have happened under a clear sky. The beautiful blue sky over much of the Eastern US that morning is the backdrop for a million memories today.

After 9/11 you’ll recall that all commercial air traffic was grounded for three days. Airplanes produce contrails, those wisps of condensation that trail jets in the sky. Depending on the amount of moisture, you may see quite a few at any given time.

Meteorologists were curious as to how the lack of contrails would effect the weather. They found that for those three days, the average range between highs and lows at more than 4,000 weather stations across the US increased by 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit.) In other words, it was a bit warmer in the day and a bit cooler at night with the cloud competition.

The effect was biggest here in the Midwest and in the Pacific Northwest, probably because the combination of usual air traffic, and moisture-laden air. The effect would be smaller in the desert southwest.
