September is here, and so is Isaac.
Remnants of the tropical trouble maker will move slowly from Missouri to Indiana over the holiday weekend. The shield of showers should move from west to east into the state today in the late morning and early afternoon. Rain will be heavy at times this afternoon through tomorrow. Showers should become less intense and more scattered Labor Day itself, but there will be at least a chance of showers and storms through Wednesday.
Latest projections give Indy and most of the metro area 3-4 inches of rain. (Click here for the full size version of the rain forecast.) Not enough to rival Labor Day 2003, and not enough to erase the rain deficit, but more than enough to mess up your weekend plans.
By the way, that rain deficit going into September 1 is 6.84 inches.
Meteorologists divide the seasons differently than the calendar does. Autumn Equinox doesn’t arrive until 10:49am September 22, but weather types consider today to be the first day of “meteorological Fall.” This is a month when weather changes accelerate. The average high by the end of the month is down to 72 degrees. By comparison, the average high is either 84 or 85 degrees all the way from June 21 through August 24. Of course, this year, that was merely a starting point.
Our chances to become the all-time biggest year for 100 degree days are now dwindling. The latest 100° day on record occurred in Indianapolis September 15, 1939. Werac’ll have to settle for third place in the Triple Digit Olympics.
