Weather never stops affecting us, as you’ll discover when next shopping for orange juice.
Huh?
The threat to Florida from Tropical Storm Isaac triggered a nearly 6 percent jump in orange juice prices on Wednesday as they surged to a six-week high in trading in New York. I think the Sunshine State is stressed because…it’s been awhile since they’ve had to deal with big-time tropical trouble. Florida has not been hit by a major hurricane since Wilma in 2005.
Current forecasts predict Isaac will not strengthen beyond a weak Category 1, with top sustained wind speeds of about 80 mph.
As Thursday begins, Isaac is still a tropical storm. It is expected to gradually strengthen as it moves west through the northeastern Caribbean. There could be more than a foot of rainfall on the island of Hispaniola, home to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Watches and warnings are everywhere, including a hurricane warning for Haiti and the south coast of the Dominican Republic. Puerto Rico’s under a tropical storm warning.
Will Issac stir up Indiana weather? Probably not, but it could bottle it up. These systems can often slow the eastward progress of USA weather makers. So, instead of a Sunday night storm chance, we could be waiting until later Monday.
No rain today, and today should be the warmest day in exactly two weeks. That’s the last time we had a high in the upper 80s.
Today will also be the 6th dry one in a row, at least in Indianapolis. That’s the longest stretch this month, but certainly not this summer. (Areas north and east of Indy did get precip on Monday of this week.)
We’ve also been out of the record business since August 8th, when Indy tied a 98 degree reading. That’s the only one this month (so far) and although it will warm, I don’t expect to add any records to our collection through the weekend. Looks like we’ll peak right around 90 Friday through Sunday. The humidity will also start to creep up during that period
We’re back in the O-Zone today. It’s called a KnoZone Action Day in Indy and Marion County, and (don’t ask) called an Ozone Action Day in Carroll, Tippecanoe, Boone, Hamilton, Hendricks, Hancock, Vigo, Owen, Morgan, Johnson, Shelby, Greene, Monroe, Bartholomew, Knox and Jackson counties.
