The south soaks more than the north today. They’ll see more rain in Seymour, but probably stay high and dry in Delphi. Indy itself has about a 30 percent chance but it jumps quickly just to the south and southeast. The chances fade tonight, but there is another 30 percent threat on Sunday, mainly in the afternoon. After that: Wednesday. And it’s another 30-40 percent scenario.
But don’t envy Evansville too much. The rain deficit there is almost 13 and a half inches. It’s about 8 and a half in Indy. If there’s no rain this weekend, then the total rainfall at the airport for the 45-day period from June 1-July 15 would remain 0.09 inches, tying the 45-day period from August 13-September 26, 1908. Another dry day Monday and the year 2012 would tie July 1901 with the driest start ever to the month of July.
I’ve attached this weekend’s precipitation prediction, and it really doesn’t get past a quarter of an inch until you get south of I 70. Maybe an inch near the Ohio River.
Feast or famine: Yuma, AZ picked up 87% of its 2012 rainfall…in 24 hours, recording 1.66 inches. Big time rain in Houston the past few days, with 10-15 inches reported in some areas.
As a result of the extreme drought conditions and the historic heat wave, the Indianapolis area had seen 17 consecutive days of 90-degree weather through July 13. This string also may not end. It’ll be close today, then a pretty safe bet through next work week. This would tie the record of 23 days set last year. That will also almost get us halfway to the all time number of 90+ days in a summer: 58 in 1983. That year is interesting because there were lots of hot days, but no triple digit marks.
