The triple digits are toast.

Today will be the first day since June 27 with a high temperature below 95 degrees.

Oh, it’s still going to be above average, and the drought is expected to deepen, but it’s SOMEthing.

A cold front moves through the state today, shutting down the daily parade of records, and giving us at least a chance of some showers and storms. Scattered stuff Saturday Night dumped some rain around Greenwood. On Twitter @shells2boys told me “My mom & sister are part of the “without power” group! Me…I got lucky :)” Meanwhile @indygowife said “we were on the edge of the storms here in Greenwood but we ended up losing power we’re in the dark no AC TV…”

Severe weather today is doubtful, although there is a chance south of the Ohio River. Tomorrow, the front moves farther south, and less humid air moves into the state. The next storm chance? Next weekend. That’s not good in a state where 85 of 92 counties still under a burn ban. That, my friend, is a state of drought.

On that subject @J0shuaW1lliams wants to know how rain Indianapolis has seen in the last month. The answer? Only a trace amount this month, and only .09 of an inch in June. Many locations in the northern half and southern third of Indiana have seen more recently, but nothing to dampen the drought.

Of all the days in the heat wave, we could probably call yesterday “the worst.” The Saturday morning low of 81 was the “highest lowest” temp in Indy since August of 1936. It was 101 by noon!

The afternoon high of 105 matched Friday’s maximum, and of course broke another daily temperature record. Here’s your updated (and hopefully, final) Triple Digit Scoreboards:

ONE HUNDRED DEGREE DAYS
12 Summer of 1936
10 Summer of 1934
6 Summer of 2012
5 Summer of 1988

CONSECUTIVE ONE HUNDRED DEGREE DAYS
9 July, 1936
6 July, 1934
4 July, 2012
3 June, 1934

During the heat wave Indianapolis tied or broke six daily high temperature records. We broke the all-time June high temperature record. Twice. We had the second hottest Independence Day ever. However… The dust bowl summers of 1936 and 1934 still claim the highest all time Indy temp: 106 is safe. For at least a week.
