Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the most anticipated cold front in decades!
That front started Saturday positioned just south of Milwaukee Wisconsin. The expected high in that city today is 85. The cold front is heading south. So don’t throw in the towel yet. (You’ll need it today to wipe off the sweat.)
Just one more day of historic heat. But what a day! Another daily high temperature record (101) from a Dust Bowl Summer will fall. Today will be Indy’s SIXTH 100+ day this year. That means we now pass 1988 in number of 100+ days. How bad can it be? There were 10 such days in 1934, and 12 days in 1936.
Today will be the 4th CONSECUTIVE 100+ day in Indy. There are only two streaks longer. (When I say “streak” I’m not trying to give you any hot weather ideas.) Those two streaks are, not surprisingly, from the 1930s. Six consecutive days in July 1934, and an amazing nine days in the blistering, non air-conditioned Summer of 1936.
Friday’s high of 105 was pretty significant in itself. Besides being the hottest day of this year (so far, knock wood, etc.) it was the hottest day, PERIOD since the all-time record day of July 14, 1936, when it was 106.
Only four summers have hit 105 or more in Indy – 1901, 1934, 1936, and now, 2012.
It was only 7th day for 105 or higher at Indy. Of course, there’s always an implied asterisk. Records didn’t start until February 1871, so I would be willing to bet some meteorology money that the toasty temps also happened before then.
Temperature relief is coming, but rain relief – not so much. Just scattered showers and storms Sunday, and then…nothing next week. The drought conditions are worse than in early July 1934 or 1936. The only times less rain fell from May 1-July 5 were in the years 1988 and 1895. For the current May 1 – July 5 period, over HALF of the rainfall during that time fell all the way back on May 1st.
The heat index at 5am Saturday was higher than the high temp forecast for Monday through Friday next week.
The average high today is 85 and the average low is 66. Records are 101 and 54. Sunrise is 6:24 and sunset is 9:16.
10 (Very high.)
We stay “low-medium” through Tuesday.
One more day of historic heat, then some scattered showers and storms Sunday. Normal highs next week!
