Ever heard of the old Johnny Cash song about the Ring Of Fire? We’ve fallen into it a few times in the last few days. A persistent ridge in the upper levels of the atmosphere (think of a big circular bubble over us) is keeping skies sunny and temperatures hot below. Eventually storms “fire” over the top of that ridge, where the heat and moisture interact with weak disturbances rotating around the massive heat dome. This often leads to numerous storm complexes across the northern plains, Corn Belt, and Great Lakes, and it’s a big time source for summer precipitation. That’s what we’ve seen the last few days.

You can fight fire with fire, but I’ll take water. Please! A twitter follower named @tamsul writes “I’m begging you WE NEED RAIN!!! We have a dome around the county or something. What gives?” She’s writing from near Shelbyville, that’s what gives.

I’ve attached an analysis of rainfall since Friday across central Indiana. The amounts have varied considerably the last few days, but generally it’s rained more in the north half of the state, (as much as two inches!) particularly after last Friday’s monster storm that got it’s start in northern Indiana.

Average high today is 85 and the average low is 66. Records are 99 and 50. Sunrise time is 6:22 and sunset comes at 9:17.

POLLEN COUNT:
Indy will be “low-medium” today and tomorrow, then “medium” Wednesday and Thursday.
