Are you ready to take notes for your grandchildren?
Today will be historically hot in Indianapolis — probably the hottest day of your life if you’re a native.
Daily high temperature records will fall across Indiana, and the all-time temperature record is within striking distance.
My forecast high is 105 for Indy, one degree down from the maximum mark of 106 set on July 14, 1936, one of the Dust Bowl summers of The Great Depression. Indianapolis weather records date back to 1871.
The daily Indianapolis high temperature record for June 28 is 101, set in 1934, another Dust Bowl summer.
An excessive heat warning is in effect from 11 a.m. Thursday to 8 p.m. Friday. Humidity will not be high, but temperatures by themselves are the reason for the warning.
A red flag warning is also in place for fire danger from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today. The ongoing drought combines with expected breezes gusting to 30 mph to create a danger for some serious spontaneous combustion.
Friday’s high should come in just above 100. The difference will be a few more clouds, and a little more moisture. There is a slight shower and storm chance from Friday afternoon through the weekend.
Highs will remain in the mid 90s through the Fourth of July. Hotter than a firecracker.
EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING 11AM THURSDAY – 8PM FRIDAY | RED FLAG WARNING 11AM – 9PM THURSDAY
