High temperatures today return to the 90s, but it’s just a…warm-up act.
A Heat Advisory and Fire Weather Watch are already in place for central Indiana and Indianapolis Thursday. The Heat Advisory specifically rolls from 11am -9pm. The elevated fire danger is sparked (if you will) by the ongoing drought. This year it’s not the humidity, it’s the heat. Relative humidity, in fact, will fall to around 25% again this afternoon.
Tomorrow’s temperatures will be the warmest June numbers we’ve seen since the equally notorious Summer of 1988. In that summer the high hit 102 on June 25, tying an all time record from 1954. And by the way, the earliest it has ever been 100 or hotter in Indy was June 2, 1934 – one of the Dust Bowl summers. The years 1934 and 1936 show up frequently in Indiana weather records.
And about those records: we’ve got a shot at new ones. The present Indy record high for Thursday is 101 from 1937. My forecast is 103. The Indy record high for Friday is 100, and that’s what I’m predicting this year.
Today will be the 22nd in a row with no official rain at the Indianapolis Airport, which is also a record for June. I’ve got a slight chance in for the last two days of the month, but that Friday/Saturday chance is only 30 percent again. We are likely to have the driest June ever in the city. The present count is .05 of an inch. We would average 3.68 in June by the point in the month. Indy was actually above average in June last year, with over 5 inches of rain by now. In other words, June 2011 brought us 100 times more precipitation!
June will NOT be in the Top Ten for temps, despite finishing with a blast. Credit all those relatively cool mornings, thanks to the abnormally dry air. So far, the average is 73.2 degrees. That’s just a little above average.
