It’s not the humidity, it’s the heat.
Highs of 100 are likely Thursday, and 90+ days could easily stretch from tomorrow into Independence Day.
Typically – when you are talking triple digits in our area – you’re also talking about big humidity. Not this time. Not this dry summer, where we can’t seem to make a connection to the Gulf Of Mexico for any kind of moisture. That means some huge temperature swings Wednesday and Thursday, where the low to high temperature spread could be 35-40 degrees.
Today is your last exit on the Fahrenheit Freeway before the above average temperatures return. Expect another beautiful sky. The breeze won’t be so big today, as surface high pressure slides slowly over northeastern Indiana. That high is east of Cincy by tomorrow morning, and that’s when we start priming the heat pump.
The Thursday forecast for Indianapolis is 100. The present record high for the date is 101. My Friday forecast is 99. The record high is 100.
Indianapolis did hit 100 twice last summer, but it didn’t happen until July 21st. And again September 3rd.
The last time temperature reached 100 degrees or higher so early in June? June 25, 1988. The 102 degree temperature on June 25, 1988 tied the all time record high for June, originally set on June 26, 1954. BTW: The earliest the temperature has ever reached 100 degrees at Indianapolis was June 2, 1934.
As of June 25 the number of 90 degree days in May and June stood at 11, the most for that time period since 1994. The number of 90 degree days is expected to grow and could reach 15 by the end of June. This would be the most for May and June since…well…1988 which had 17 days. The record for May and June is 19 days set in 1934.
It’s not the humidity, it’s the heat. We’ve only had .05″ of precipitation the entire month officially in Indy. That’s on pace to be the driest June since .36″ of rain fell in (wait for it!) 1988.
The drought will open deepen, and every hot breeze will bring a fresh fire danger. There are only small storm chances in the Friday and Saturday forecast.
