Hot (if you will) off the press! A chance of showers in the middle of the heat!
The last few days I’ve gazed with envy at all that white on the satellite loop. It’s spinning away in the Plains but melts as it runs into a ridge over us. That blocking high pressure ridge *may* break down a bit Saturday night into Sunday, so I’ve put in a 40 percent chance of scattered showers and storms for the second half of the weekend.
Don’t stop your sprinkler, though. The overall pattern doesn’t offer much hope.
Countywide burn bans are now in effect in several northeastern Indiana counties, as well as Knox county in southwest Indiana. Click here for the map.
Indiana’s area of moderate drought has more than doubled in the last week. Same story with the area of severe drought. Drought conditions now cover nearly 90% of the state. Click here for that chart.
The moderate drought has expanded southward to Lafayette and Kokomo, over toward Marion. The area of severe drought is expanding northeastward out of the southwest corner of Indiana, including Evansville. The Indianapolis metro area is “abnormally dry.”
And the ten percent? Only the southeast counties closer to the Ohio River are still unaffected.
And speaking of dry conditions: the Indianapolis humidity was down to 17 percent(!) yesterday afternoon. It will get muggier heading into the weekend.
Today is a Knozone Action Day in Indy, and an Ozone Action Day (different names; same thing) in Boone, Hamilton, Hendricks, Hancock, Owen, Morgan, Johnson, Shelby, Greene, and Monroe counties.
COAST TO COAST:
Three tornadoes yesterday in Kansas and Colorado, where there could be more storms today. Rain by itself is good news in Colorado, where the High Park Fire near Ft. Collins now covers 52,000 acres. It’s about 20 percent contained.
