Patchy fog at first for Tuesday. Credit yesterday’s rain, combined with skies that started to clear overnight. Not a bad day otherwise. Biggest difference you’ll notice is the drop in humidity behind yesterday’s rain-making cold front. That front produced about half an inch of rain later in Indianapolis, and another day in the 80s.
All but two days of the month so far have been 80+, but that’s over for at least a week. Nothing drastic – highs will be near normal, but low temps early Thursday and Friday will be cooler than average. Cooler than average but not cool enough to threaten your young tomatoes.
Those flowers and plants got a good watering yesterday. Here are rain totals from around the state:
1.41″ Muncie
.90″ Bloomington
.90″ Shelbyville
.76″ Lafayette
.66″ South Bend
.48″ Indy
.05′ Terre Haute
The biggest rains from this system came in the northwest and southeast parts of Indiana. Southwest Indiana didn’t get much, which continues a trend for Evansville, which has done an about-face from the spring of 2011: The February + March + April precipitation total last year was 21.63 inches. This year it’s only 5.70 inches. April is especially noteworthy. Last year the month was flooded with 11.77 inches of precip. This year it was only 1.44 inches.
The 6-10 Day Outlook, through May 17 indicates lower-than-average moisture across the entire state. Southwest Indiana is not under a drought yet, but is designated as “abnormally dry.” So was northwest Indiana, although recent rains may change that. The latest drought monitor will be released later today, and I’ll update you tomorrow.
