Friday temperatures in Indianapolis will lag yesterday by about 10 degrees. Our morning low was 35. The day began below freezing in South Bend and Ft. wayne where lows hit 28. Even Muncie fell to 29.
I don’t see any more freezing threats ahead. The long-range forecasts keep both temperature and precipitation solidly above average in Indianapolis for at least the first 10 days in May.
The rain holds off until at least sunset tonight. Still looks wet Saturday, although there are indications the showers might diminish by mid or late afternoon. Unfortunately there are also indications the clouds and perhaps drizzle could hang on through Sunday morning.
A stationary front will be stalled Saturday down in southern Indiana, and what a front it is. Highs tomorrow will range from 48 in South Bend to 67 in Evansville.
Here in The Middle? It’s gonna smell like wet dog for yet another Mutt Strut. The Humane Society of Indianapolis fundraiser has had some bad weather luck in the last few years. It will be dreary, with temps mainly in the low 50s in the midday. Good news: the threat is more of a rain thing than a storm thing, and the pooches won’t miss the heat. So put on your jacket, take your umbrella, and don’t forget to wipe your paws.
Not quite as wet for the 500 Festival REV Your Engines Concert that IndyStar.com is helping to sponsor Saturday night. Just a slight shower chance, and maybe some drizzle for the free event that starts at 8 p.m., and features The Romantics and The Plain White T’s. Temps will be in the upper 50s.
You’ll want to double check the Doppler before *you* make any outdoor appearances this weekend.
WIKI-POTEETIA:
It’s hard to follow a weather act like March. In fact, the average temperature for April in Indianapolis will be about 2 degrees cooler than March.
Typically the average monthly temperature increases nearly 11 degrees from March to April. This will be only the second time since 1872 when March was warmer than April. The only other occurrence was in 1907.
Both events were caused by either a record-warm or record-cold month. In 1907, March was followed by the coldest April of record. This year a record-warm March is followed by an April with near-normal temperatures. In other words: there’s nothing really odd about this month, other than, it was preceded by that month.
Think of it this way: By the end of the month (if my forecast is in the ballpark) Indy will have had 12 days with below-normal temperatures. In March, there were only 4 such days.
Or this way: There’s only been one day with 80 degree or warmer temps this month. There were seven in March, including five consecutive days!
The months do have something in common. Looks like the average wind speed will be similar. It’s been breezy this spring. Just yesterday Indianapolis measured a wind gust of 32 mph. It won’t be as windy today, but the breeze will pick again Saturday, with speeds up to 20 mph Saturday.

POLLEN COUNT:
One more “high” day today and then relief for the weekend! Pollen levels will drop to “medium” Saturday and then “low/medium” Sunday! The count jumps back to “medium/high” Monday.
INDY ALMANAC:
The average high today is 67 and the average low is 47. Records are 84 and 30. Sunrise time is 6:50 and sunset is 8:36.
