Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy weather ride.
Showers started the day in parts of central Indiana. It’s possible that the weather woke you at some point. The best morning chances will come north and east of Indianapolis. There should be a break after that batch, then Ma Nature starts cooking at lunch time. Get ready to rumble this afternoon. A surface low pressure system and its attached cold front will trigger another round of more potent thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center places virtually all of Indiana under a slight risk for severe weather.
Biggest threats today are large hail and damaging winds. All of this could bring about a half inch of new precipitation. Despite Indy’s 2 inch March snowfall deficit, we are just fine on overall precipitation. Going into Friday the March total was 3.57 inches. The average is 3.30 inches. For the year Indy is at 8.43 inches, whereas normal is 8.28 inches. Plenty of moisture for our lawns. We’ve mowed our twice already. If only the mower used the same mixture that’s sitting in the snow blower.
The weekend looks quiet, with another brief temperature dip Saturday, and *nearly* record breaking temps possible Sunday and Monday. Next storm chance would be Monday afternoon and evening, and that also carries the risk of severe weather.
I’ve always said weather generates as much minutiae as baseball when it comes to statistics. With that said, today is the 21st consecutive day of above normal temperatures in Indianapolis. This month is a lock for “warmest March ever.” It will also set marks for most days with highs in the 80s. (Seven days total.) It will set the record for most days in the 70s. (Today should be the 14th.)
Still won’t crack that all time record March temp of 85, from 1981. Our peak was 84 on the 21st.
