Think of today as a “60s sandwich” in between the 75 degree high of Wednesday and the expected high of 72 Friday. It will be nice again today, but it won’t be as warm or as windy in Indy. The breeze will be about 10mph from the northeast.
The peak wind gust yesterday was 38mph from the west. The wind shift from west to northwest came at 7pm last night. By midnight winds were out of the north, and then the northeast by 2am this morning. Computer models have them starting to turn again tonight, and out of the south Friday, helping to bring up warmer and more moist air, and setting the stage for showers and storms.
There sure wasn’t a lot of moisture Wednesday. The 9am temp was 64 and the dew point was 56, yielding a relative humidity of 75. By 5pm the temp hit 75 and the dew point had dropped to 39! That meant a humidity of 27%. Combine very dry air with a brisk wind, and moisture doesn’t have a chance on your skin. Those numbers explain my post-running menu from Wednesday: two cans of root beer and a glass of water. (I’m still kind of thirsty as I write early this morning.) (Coffee! Stat!)
Could be worse: the humidity at 5pm yesterday in Phoenix was 11%. Friends who have done running races in Arizona say that when you are finished it takes a while to wipe off all the accumulated salt from your skin. As you perspire, the moisture quickly evaporates, and salt crystal deposits remain. BTW: Dew points won’t change much today, but the lower afternoon temps mean relative humidity will be a bit higher.
The early word on our weekend is: WOW. The upper air ridge builds back in, and we could be back to breaking some records. The two we *could* threaten are 82 on April 1st, and 81 on April 2nd. Both were set just two years ago.
Storms look likely Monday, with a good chance of some severe weather. That system’s been signalling trouble for some time. Behind it, colder air looks likely from about Wednesday of next week into Easter Weekend. A little wet snow is possible in Wisconsin, Michigan, the Northeast part of the country.
