This is The End, my friend. The streak of record highs is over in Indy, but we will stay above normal for the next 7 days. Rain is also going to add variety to our forecast.
The Big Wheel in the middle and upper atmosphere keeps on turning, and that’s our focus for rain and storms through Saturday. As the upper level lows moves out of the Plains, shower and storm chances start first today in western and southwestern Indiana. Most of central Indiana has a chance by this afternoon, and it looks likely tonight. Expect one round of rain in the morning on Friday, then the clouds may break for a bit.
Friday afternoon the upper level low should be fairly close, and may help stir things up enough for some severe storms. The biggest threat is hail. Behind the low Saturday: lot s of clouds, and lingering shower chances.
Yesterday was the Peak Of the Heat. Indy, Lafayette, Ft. Wayne and South Bend all had the highest numbers yet.
87 Ft. Wayne (broke a record from 1907)
86 Lafayette (broke a record from 1997)
85 South Bend (broke a record from 1938)
85 Terre Haute (broke a record from 2011)
84 Indianapolis (broke a record from 1907)
84 Muncie (broke a record from 1997)
84 Bloomington (broke a record from 2011)
Chicago hit 87 yesterday. One degree shy of the all time March record. Looks like Indy will end up one-shy of our all time March record, as will Lafayette. Ft. Wayne smashed their all-timer yesterday. Pellston Michigan obliterated an old record high of 53 by burning up to 85!
It’s not just the land that’s unusually warm. Water temperatures at the South Lake Michigan buoy were around 47 yesterday …about 10 above average for this time of year, and typical of early June temperatures.
One measure of the heat wave? It’s had an effect on NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center web site. The extremes section of the their web site had been down for almost a week. They’ve had to re-engineer new software to handle both the huge number of records being set and the huge demand from people wanting to see them!
