A bright and breezy day is ahead. The wind chill is likely to stay sub-freezing through the day, but tomorrow brings a temperature turnaround. High pressure drops in for a well-timed weekend visit. It will be overhead overnight tonight, then set up shop to the east Saturday. The clockwise circulation around it brings southerly winds back to Indiana for the weekend, aiding in the warm up.
Our next rain chance comes Sunday night. Indy officially recorded .57″ of rain Thursday. That’s the most precipitation we’d recorded since last Friday, when severe storms raked southern Indiana, and brought hail to central Indiana. The Storm Prediction Center predicts no Wild Weather through the weekend, which is welcome.
I wrote yesterday about the coronal mass ejection associated with Tuesday evening’s strong Solar flare. NOAA is reporting this morning that the “event continues to only minimally affect the Earth,” although” the magnetic field strength…has been fairly high, it has not been of the orientation needed to cause strong geomagnetic storming.” That would seem a dissapointment for sky watchers, who were hoping the flares would eventually translate into increased sightings of aurora.
Nevertheless, I cruised Twitter early this morning and found @NBC26, a tv station in Green Bay, Wisconsin tweeting: “Northern Lights Visible Right now!!!!!!!!!”
Here’s one from @mollysue, who lists Gridwood, Alaska as home in her Twitter bio: “It is zero degrees. I’m standing outside in my pjs. I’m watching the northern lights dance. They really do dance.”
And from @alexlkaul, “It’s 1am, I’m standing on the end of a pier out in the Puget Sound, and I’m looking at the Northern Lights #bestnightever”
Or, you could be @misskashyoungg: “Northern Lights are out but I can’t go because my parents are mad at me.”
Lights out, young lady!
