The second severe outbreak of the week looms large today, with a large low pressure system as the center of attention at the surface. The low moves from around St. Louis in the morning to around South Bend by sunset. It will pull a warm front up in the morning and showers and storms will form along the front, from south to north. The main threat from those storms will be large hail. In the afternoon the winds above the surface will speed up, and the surface low will swing a cold front into Indiana. The threat then shifts to high wind and possible tornadoes, as storms light up the radar.
I think the main severe weather threat will be from 1-7 pm. A WIND ADVISORY is in place from 4-10 pm. Wind gusts, even outside of thunderstorms, could reach 45 mph. The storms should end quickly from west to east through the very early evening hours.
That spinning circulation sparks huge temperature differences across the region today. Temps will struggle to get to 40 in Chicago. It will hit the mid 50’s in South Bend, mid to upper 60’s in central Indiana, and will warm to the low 70’s around Bloomington and southern Indiana. Tomorrow: back to Winter, already in progress.
Those 60s and 70s will seem a season or two away when we face highs in the low 40s and upper 30’s this weekend, with the possibility of rain and snow showers Sunday. It’s a three day chill, before a temperature turnaround with warmer sunshine Tuesday.
