A cloudy, foggy, drizzly start to Friday. Patience is a weather virtue today, with some sunshine by afternoon. It won’t last. The next system marches in late tonight, but keep your shovel hanging up in the garage. Less than an inch of snow is expected in the Indy Metro, with around an inch possible once you get as far north as Lafayette and Kokomo and Muncie. The snow will in the southern third of the state, where little or no accumulation is expected. Flurries could be back again on a colder Sunday, but the good news on both of these events: no “and/or” in the forecast. JUST snow/flurries. No mixing.
I promised Super Bowl-focused forecasts Thursday and Friday in the IndyStar Sunrise section, and today’s video features the 7 Day forecast PLUS 3 more sort of super days.
Good thing we were still “Naptown” and not a “Super City” in 1978. Indianapolis was still snow blind 34 years ago today, reeling from The Blizzard Of ’78.
Winds gusted to 55mph, and up to 20 inches of snow fell around Central Indiana, with up to 40 inches in the northern part of the State. The wicked wind caused 15-20 foot drifts, and wind chills down to 50 below zero.
The storms set a record for snowfall from a single storm in Indianapolis, where 15.5 inches was recorded. That month brought 30.6 inches of total snow! It was bad enough to shut down the airport, and bring out the National Guard. If you’d like to read some Blizzard “stories,” head over to my Twitter page, and scroll down to the entries from yesterday. There are more stories here. The Weather Service summary of the storm is here.
This winter doesn’t even come close to coming close. The Indy snow total stands at 6.3 inches. The normal total at this point would be 15.2 inches, and by this point last year there had been 27.8 inches, above the typical total for an entire season.
INDY ALMANAC: The average high today in Indianapolis is 36. Average low is 21. Records are 66 and -10. Sunrise time is 7:58 and sunset is 5:58.
