I don’t think the rush hour in the Indy metro will be icy, but it will still be a raw deal. Wind chills between about 5 and 15, and some light snow and sleet.
The Winter Weather Advisory officially rolls until 5am Saturday. A Winter Storm Warning is in place for far east/southeast counties where the ice could be thicker.
The greatest precipitation potential lies between about 7 and midnight. That’s when an elevated area of warmer air is poised to strike the southern half of the state. Precipitation is melted in that warmer layer but then freezes on contact with the cooler surface. North of I-70 you are still more likely to get snow mixed with some sleet and freezing rain, as our attached map indicates. In those places four inches of snow may accumulate.
Saturday will be quiet, and Sunday is teasing us with promises of near-50 degree weather from Indy southward. Rain looks likely by Sunday night, so you could say this week’s weather pattern is “snow, repeat, mix, and rinse.”
ALMANAC:
Average high in Indy today would be 36, and the average low 20. Record high is 70, and record low is -22. Sunrise is 8:02 and sunset is at 5:50. That means we’ve added about one-half hour of daylight onto the afternoon since Christmas-time.
