Snow will hit central Indiana in midday through afternoon rush hour. Around an inch will fall in the Indy metro area, with one to two inches possible from Lafayette to Anderson to Richmond northward. Bursts of snow in the midday may cause cause visibilities to lower, so be ready for a slightly slower trip out for lunch. The snow should diminish rapidly from north to south from late afternoon to early evening, setting the stage for a cold night in the teens.
Mother Nature reloads quickly, and another couple of systems approach Friday afternoon. Snow could return by mid afternoon, and it could be mixed with sleet. Friday night there will be an area of warmer temperatures above the surface, with will be below freezing. That could cause melted precipitation to freeze upon contact. It would be our first encounter with freezing rain and icy conditions this season.
In addition to the ice there will be another round of accumulating snow in the north half of Indiana friday evening. That area of low pressure would depart fairly early Saturday morning, but Saturday will start with lots of clouds.
Yesterday @trevorkight on Twitter noted “Hometown of Seattle got 6″ of snow today… Has Indy even seen that much TOTAL all winter? @PaulPoteet.” The answer is no. The seasonal total is 5.1, but we should be neck and neck by the end of the day. If you have any weather questions, I’m available all the time on Facebook and Twitter. Simply search “Paul Poteet.”
