Let me do the math for you – we’ll have to add before we subtract. At least, a little. An inch or less of snow is expected across central Indiana Thursday. A couple of upper waves are responsible for that, along with a warm front at the surface to our south.
By tonight, that warm front will be moving on past us to the north. A warm front generally means a boundary between milder and cooler air, with the warmer winning.
However.
A likely scenario tonight and early Friday is that above freezing air will arrive, but a shallow layer near the surface will stay just below freezing. Thanks, snow pack! That would mean precipitation tonight could fall as a liquid and freeze on contact. Available moisture isn’t impressive, so the most likely outcome will be some freezing drizzle mixed with, or instead of, light snow.
As the front pulls away to the north Friday morning the wintry mix chances leave with it. Most of Friday will be dry, and by the time precipitation chances return in the afternoon, all levels around here should support just plain rain. And that rain is likely Friday night into Saturday morning. Expect rain totals ranging from ¾ to an inch by Saturday afternoon. Localized flooding – and widespread parking lot meltdowns – are expected.
